Why a trade can meet every criterion and still fail — and what a good review looks like.

One of the most useful entries in a journal is the trade that met every criterion and still lost. It separates two questions that are easy to confuse: “Did I follow my process?” and “Did the trade work?”

Process and outcome are different things

On this site, Strategy Match measures how many documented criteria were present. The result records what happened. A 100% match with a failed result is a perfectly valid entry: the setup was there, and the market did something else.

Strategy Match does not indicate the probability of success. A high match is not a guarantee, and a low match is not a prediction of failure.

A simple review template

  1. What did I see, and which criteria were present?
  2. Was the entry inside the zone I planned?
  3. Did the stop and target match the plan?
  4. Was any rule bent after entry?
  5. What, if anything, would I change — and is that a sample of one?

Do not rewrite the strategy after a single loss. Look for a pattern across many entries before changing a rule, and create a new strategy version when you do.

Conclusion

Honest reviews of losing trades are what make a journal worth reading. They are also the entries I learn the most from.
